Wedding tradition - throwing the garter
In the 1300s in Europe, people believed it was good luck to obtain a piece of the bride's dress on her wedding day and, being a superstitious and fearful lot, they would chase the bride tearing fabric from her dress. Tossing the garter came about in order to spare the bride's dress (perhaps so her future daughter could have 'something old' on her own wedding day).
